New Dual-Screen Asus Zenbook Duo becomes available in Australia

Nik Ross 29 Yanvar 2024

We usually have to wait a long time for laptops announced at the Las Vegas, CES trade show to show-up on these shores but Aussies won’t have to wait long for the new, proper dual-screen Zenbook Duo to hit Australia. The previous Zenbook Duos have been odd, experimental, yet impressive models models with a narrow second screen and squished keyboard and trackpad. However, the new model has two screens that are joined in the middle, similar to the Lenovo yoga kitobi 9i.

We featured the new Zenbook Duo as part of our Asus CES 2024 coverage but now there are more details regarding specs and availability. It’s available, now, for pre-order from Asus’ own e-Shop and also JB Hi-Fi. Other retailers won’t have to wait long, as they’ll get it from Valentine’s Day (14th February).

The new Zenbook Duo is Intel evolyutsiyasi certified and weighs just 1.35KG, putting it in ultraportable territory. It has two, 14-inch, UHD, 120Hz, Asus Lumina, OLED, 16:10 screens which are connected by a “lay-flat 180° hinge” that can expand the visual workspace to almost 20-inches. It has a separate keyboard/trackpad and can be used in multiple vertical and horizontal orientations including traditional laptop, dual-screen desktop, traditional tablet or even screen-shared devices (the latter is operated via Asus’ ScreenXpert software).

It’s powered by a new Intel Core Ultra 9 processor with its integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for AI acceleration, up to 32 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up-to a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 hard drive. It has a sizable 75Wh battery plus Harman Kardon-certified, Dolby Atmos speakers.

The ASUS Lumina OLED screen is Dolby Vision certified, Pantone Validated and supports 100 per cent of the tricky DCI-P3 colour space to please Creators and designers. It’s also VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified and has a game-friendly 120Hz refresh rate.

Al of Asus’ Lumina OLED displays are TÜV Rheinland certified and can reduce blue-light-induced eye weariness by up to 70 per cent without affecting colour accuracy. The Zenbook Duo’s ambient light colour sensor can adjust brightness according to environmental lighting conditions.

Both screens support touch and also high-precision stylus input via an optional 4,096-pressure-level Asus Pen. The ScreenXpert software facilitates smartphone-like multitouch gestures which include the ability to summon a virtual keyboard using a two-fingered tap.

The thin, rechargeable keyboard can be detached when using the Zenbook Duo in desktop mode or, as we’ve seen with rivals from HP and Lenovo (and Asus), placed upon the lower screen to act as a traditional laptop. The pogo-pin connectors on the edge of the lower screen use auto-positioning magnets to make adding the keyboard simple and robust.

The Zenbook Duo’s battery is stated to last 8 hours – a full day out of the office. It can also charge to 60 per cent in 49 minutes. Asus says that it also has an, “Eco-friendly extended lifespan that supports up to 20 per cent” more charging cycles than the previous generation. As an Intel Evo laptop, the Zenbook Duo is obliged to wake instantly, charge quickly and deliver all-day battery life.

Asus has added a heat spreader, between the motherboard and the OLED panel, as part of its cooling system to allow, “The CPU and GPU to run at up to a 35-Watts combined TDP” without the need for performance throttling.

Connectivity within the thin, 15mm chassis features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI 2.1 video out and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

The webcam has a hardware privacy shield, supports Windows Hello face-recognition log-in and uses the NPU to enhance web conferences with more-accurate background blur and (the contentious) eye contact correction feature. The microphone array features Asus’ impressive 3D Noise Reduction.

Asus says that the Zenbook Duo is designed with sustainability and durability in mind using, “A variety of recycled materials and is durability tested to US MIL-STD-810H standards” for robustness. The screens are made with tough, Corning Gorilla Glass. It’s also been fabricated from 90 per cent post-industrial recycled magnesium-aluminium alloy.
